The escape and captivity of the Danish Jews

27/09/23

Lectures

Join us for an exciting lecture when Simon Kratholm Ankjærgaard talks about the escape and captivity of the Danish Jews.

On the night between 1 and 2 October 1943, the Germans attacked the Jews in Denmark. The action was the start of a dramatic, nerve-wracking and emotional month, during which around 7.000 Jews managed to escape to Sweden, while just under 500 did not get away in time and ended up in the belly of a transport ship or in a cattle car headed for the dark interior of Theresienstadt .

In the lecture, the events unfold day by day, week by week. This happens through a number of historical figures who, in their own way, were centrally located in the middle of the events.

The action against the Danish Jews has subsequently acquired an iconic image - at home as well as abroad - and has been produced countless times. Here, the audience gets a comprehensive, nuanced narrative and explanation of that autumn, which was so marked in the Danish identity and national narrative. This is done via completely new sources and eyewitnesses who have never come forward before.
