After the liberation
The traces of the war among Danish Jews
By museum inspector, MA Signe Bergman Larsen and museum inspector mag.art. Sara Fredfeldt Stadager, both from the Danish Jewish Museum
"Denmark is free again" was written on the front pages of the newspaper on May 5, 1945. A huge redemption after 5 cursed years. The same redemption also came to the over 18.000 Danes who stayed as refugees in Sweden, of whom approx. 8000 of them had fled in 1943 because of the Nazi persecution of Jews.
For them, however, joy was also mixed with anxiety. What did you return home to? Were you even welcome at home? But what were the fates of European family members? The war's state of emergency quickly revealed a jumble of destinies and legislation that could feel slightly random to the individual.
Over three lectures, Sara Fredfeldt Stadager and Signe Bergman Larsen shed light on the emotional and dramatic days: From the immediate happiness over the liberation over the mass return home and the new everyday life to the realization of the scope of the war and the necessary and varied processing.
