Left behind. Janina Katz and the Polish Jews in Denmark

09/10/25

New special exhibition

We will soon open the doors to a new special exhibition!

We have been looking forward to opening our new special exhibition for a long time. Left behind. Janina Katz and the Polish Jews in Denmark. It will happen on October 9th.

Based on the writings of Danish-Polish Jewish author Janina Katz (1939–2013), the exhibition tells the story of the approximately 3.000 Polish Jews who arrived in Denmark in the years 1969–1975.

They had fled anti-Semitic and anti-Zionist persecution under communist rule in Poland. In Denmark they became part of existing Jewish communities, which they both influenced and were influenced by. They brought with them new perspectives – and not least a different memory of the Holocaust.

The exhibition opens up a story about escape, identity and cultural anchoring, and shows how literature and personal stories can shed new light on an often overlooked part of Danish Jewish history.

New book publication

In connection with the exhibition, the museum is also publishing an anthology of the same name as the special exhibition, in which a number of voices contribute perspectives on this special migration history.

The anthology can be purchased in the museum shop from October 9th.
