Yiddish, YIVO and living cultural heritage
Lectures

Join us for a lecture by Associate Professor Jan Schwarz
How does a language that has been declared dead for 200 years survive? And why is Yiddish currently experiencing a new renaissance?
Associate Professor Jan Schwarz from Lund University invites you to a fascinating lecture about Yiddish as a literary, cultural and identity-creating language – from the Eastern European shtetls to today's academic and artistic environments in Europe, the USA and Israel.
Based at the YIVO Institute in New York, the world's most important center for Yiddish culture, Jan Schwarz talks about the history of the language, its many worlds, and the renewed interest that extends far beyond Netflix series and popular culture.
It's about literature, migration, identity, political movements – and about a cultural heritage that refuses to disappear.
A lecture for anyone interested in Jewish history, language, culture and the stories that shape us.
The lecture is held in collaboration with the Society for Danish Jewish History.
