In 1943, the German occupying power began the campaign against the Danish Jews. Although many managed to escape to Sweden through a great public effort, almost 500 Jews were apprehended and deported to Theresienstadt. This year marks 80 years since the dramatic events took place. The Danish Jewish Museum is marking this with a wide range of initiatives during 2023, starting with a new visual material for use by all cultural institutions that will shed light on the important historical event.

The marking of the 80th anniversary of the action against the Danish Jews is not just an important Danish event. It is also marked in a number of other countries, where history is remembered as a light in the darkness during the Holocaust. For example, a brand new exhibition at The Jewish Heritage Museum in New York, which opens this autumn with the title "Courage to Act: Rescue in Denmark", will convey the story to young people in particular.

In this country, history has become an important part of the narrative about Denmark's role and performance during the Second World War. Not only is it the story of the rescue. It is equally a story of escape, in which the Danish Jews themselves played an active role, and of the violent and terrible experiences both during escape, exile and captivity, which resulted in scars on both life and soul.

"We have developed a new material with a common symbol and a website that will help to create greater visibility for the marking and an overview of the many activities that will take place during 2023. We hope and encourage that it will be used widely by all cultural institutions, precisely to raise awareness of this important history and marking".

says Janus Møller Jensen, director of the Danish Jewish Museum.
