Niels Bohr's Nobel Prize

30/11/22

100th anniversary of Niels Bohr's Nobel Prize

100th anniversary of Niels Bohr's Nobel Prize

This year marks 100 years since Niels Bohr received the Nobel Prize in Physics, for "his merits in the study of the structure of atoms and the radiation that emanates from them". The museum marks this in the form of the launch of a woodcut by the artist Jens Bohr. On 30 November at 16-17.30 invites the museum to a small selection where the woodcut is presented and it can subsequently be purchased as a poster. The Bohr Jewish connection will be presented both in a more general perspective and through a personal angle. Both parts are expressed in Jens Bohr's atmospheric woodcuts.

Niels Bohr's mother, Ellen Adler Bohr, came from a wealthy Jewish family, while his father, Christian Bohr, was a Lutheran – Niels Bohr was baptized, but considered himself a free thinker. Nevertheless, he had to flee to Sweden in 1943 – already on 25 September. The flight went from Sydhavnen in Copenhagen to Køge Bay. Here the refugees were transferred to a trawler that brought them to Limhamn south of Malmö. The 100th year has been marked on several occasions, where the focus has naturally been on his role in physics. We also think his Jewish connection deserves to be highlighted in that context.
