Danish Jews in Sweden in 1943-1945
Right now you can read "Escape or vacation? Danish Jews' refugee existence in Sweden 1943-1945 seen through private photo albums" in the professional journal Tings Tale, published by Nord Academics.
The article is written by museum curator Signe Bergman Larsen and is a result of the research project “Danish Jews in Swedish Exile 1943-1945”, which was supported with funds from the Danish Agency for Palaces and Culture. The topic had long been an open collection and research matter at the museum, and with the allocation of the research funds it was possible to work further and more focused on this part of the museum’s collection.
The project centered on a series of unique photo albums that document Danish Jews' refugee stay in Sweden and their memories of it. You can now read more about this in the article, which highlights some of the themes that can be traced in the photo albums.
By treating this group of very personal sources together, it has been possible to get closer to how Danish Jews experienced and processed their refugee stay, and it has brought completely new perspectives to the exploration of World War II and the Holocaust. It has shown us that photo albums are not just a collection of images, but experiences, memories, processing and an enormously important historical source.
Do you have photo albums?
During the project, we both became aware of and collected several photo albums, including from the Danish School in Lund. Therefore, we continue with this important work and hereby invite you: Do you have a photo album that you think we should take a closer look at? Then contact Signe Bergman Larsen at sbl@jewmus.dk.
