New exhibition in Odense

Jewish cemeteries in the province

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the Jewish cemetery in Odense. It marks The House of History in Odense in collaboration with The Danish Jewish Museum with a pop-up exhibition and new signage at the cemetery in Odense.

Come to the commemoration and exhibition opening at the cemetery opposite Odense Assistenskirkegård. We will offer refreshments and there will be speeches by, among others, former Chief Rabbi Bent Lexner.

The Jewish burial grounds are physical traces and cultural heritage monuments in the landscape, which bear witness to the Jewish life lived in Denmark over 400 years. According to tradition, they may not be demolished and are 'for eternal use'. The resting place of the dead is therefore also referred to in Hebrew as Beit Olam - The House of Eternity, which is also the title of the exhibition.

The exhibition and marking are part of the project The House of Eternity – the Jewish cemeteries in Denmark  supported by the Danish Agency for Palaces and Culture, which will focus on the cultural heritage that the burial grounds represent.

When: June 19, 2025, 16.00:18.00 PM - XNUMX:XNUMX PM

Where: The parking lot at Odense Assistenskirkegård in Odense on the corner of Kirkegårds Allé and Vandværksvej

The project is supported by pool funds from the Danish Agency for Palaces and Culture and is carried out in collaboration between the Danish Jewish Museum and local actors in the ten cities with burial grounds.
