Knowledge Café about the Power of Words

08/04/26

Nyborg

How do we talk about tolerance, prejudice and community in a time when the debate is often sharp and polarized? It is a complex topic that Janus Møller Jensen, director of the Danish Jewish Museum, will explore.

Hatred and prejudice against Jews, simply because they are Jews, is called anti-Semitism. It is prejudice that has been expressed in words, images, and actions for centuries. Language helps shape our view of other people and the world we share. When words and ideas are repeated many times, they can come to resemble truths.

The event is created in continuation of the traveling exhibition The Power of Words, which could be experienced at Nyborg Library. The word has been chosen as the theme because it matters how we talk about each other. Based on Danish-Jewish history from Christian IV's invitation to Jews in 1622 to the present day, Janus Møller Jensen will shed light on the power of the word and how Jewish life in Denmark has always moved in the field of tension between acceptance and discrimination, tolerance and anti-Semitism.

The purpose of the traveling exhibition and this knowledge café is to give the audience a more nuanced and enlightened perspective in a difficult present, where prejudice and hatred are once again on the rise.
