Gratitude accompanied the joy of the liberation and of being home again. Personal gratitude assumed many forms. It was directed towards both Denmark, Sweden, and towards individuals who had helped them to flee.

A gift in gratitude
A gift in gratitude

This silk painting was presented to Rector Frederik Bøgh of Christianshavn's Gymnasium [high school] in 1946 in gratitude for his efforts on behalf of the Danish Jews in October 1943. The painting has been in the possession of the Bøgh family until it was donated to the Danish Jewish Museum.

Fanny Samson made the painting and the quote is from Hans Christian Andersen's poem, I Danmark er jeg født (In Denmark I am born):"God give you a future - as he gave you memories" (The Danish Jewish Museum).

Thanks to Sweden
Thanks to Sweden
Both during and after the war, gratitude was great for Sweden's reception of the Danish Jews in October 1943, as well as other aid. This thank you card was saved by a Danish Jewish family as a fond memory (The Danish Jewish Museum).
